Sketch Tuesdays at 111 Minna Gallery

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

guest post by Josh Ellingson

Sketch Tuesdays - R2

Once a month, 111 Minna Gallery off of Second Street in San Francisco transforms into a gigantic makeshift studio for “Sketch Tuesdays”. It’s a live-sketching event and a great way to score artwork directly from local artists at great prices. Seating for monthly guest-sketchers is provided in the center of the room, marked with chalk name-plates. In addition to general boozing and schmoozing, attendees are invited to sketch along as well. The wealth of creativity is astonishing, and the deals are just too good to pass up. This month’s all-star line up included talents such as Mike Giant, Skinner, Ferris Plock, and Nate Van Dyke. I headed out to 111 Minna to cover the event and snag some affordable artwork. DJs Jay Howell (yes, even the DJs are artists) and Ruthie kept the hits flowing while I bumbled through the throngs of art fans. Here’s the photographic evidence:
Special thanks to Emily Lakin (@hazelbrown) for photographic assistance.

Sketch Tuesday - Jesse Balmer, Sagan Quote
I picked up this piece from artist Jessie Balmer after recognizing the Carl Sagan quote from the popular  remix video, “A Glorious Dawn”. Apparently we’ve both been humming the tune all week.

Gowalla, A Location Based Social Network For Discovering & Exploring New Places

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

I’ve recently been trying out Gowalla, a location based social network that launched at SXSW this year along with Foursquare. Foursquare picked up a bunch of early adopters (I’ve been using is since it launched), especially those who used to use Dodgeball, but in the last few months, Gowalla has been ramping up quite a bit.

The two services are similar, with one major difference is that Gowalla uses GPS to verify locations, where with Foursquare you can check in to a location without even being there, something that is often abused. Also, currently Gowalla is only available for the iPhone without a SMS option, but they are currently working on support for other phones.

One big advantage that Gowalla has over Foursquare is that it can be used anywhere around the world. Foursqure is only in available in a few cities at the moment, with plans to expand in the future.

Like Foursquare, Gowalla also has a game layer. You can pickup and drop items at various locations. Dropping an item lets you become a founder of a location when you enter it into their database. Gowalla also has a “Trips” feature that encourages your to explore new areas in a city.

Another thing that sets Gowalla apart is their design. They use a clever icon set for various types of locations as well as many custom graphics for featured spots.

The Next Web and TechCrunch both recently did extensive reviews of Gowalla.

The best thing about Foursquare and Gowalla is that they encourage people to step away from the computer and leave their home to explore the world around them.

Noisebridge Year 1: Open Hacker House

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

guest post by Burstein!

The hackerspace Noisebridge is one of San Francisco’s cultural and artistic gems. Its members have contributed a wide variety of art, hacks and local culture.

Noisebridge is a space for sharing, creation, collaboration, research, development, mentoring, and of course, learning. Noisebridge is also more than a physical space, it’s a community with roots extending around the world. We help people build neat and awesome things.

On Friday, October 2nd, these über-makers and geeks are having an open house for their one year anniversary that will show off what they have done and can do. This alone is worth the price of admission, which is free. Things to see include:

Also at the event will be the Reverse Engineering Bar with only the geekiest of drinks and music by DIY-band Corpus Callosum and Cally McMorrow, circuit bender of legend.

Strange Light, Photos From the Great Australian Dust Storm

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Within a day and a half of of the incredible dust storm that turned Sydney, Australia orange last week, Derek Powazek had published Strange Light, a magazine featuring beautiful photos of this rare event. The 40 page magazine is available for $6.

Strange light fell over Australia on 23 September 2009. An unexpected dust storm blanketed New South Wales and Queensland, turning everything an eerie shade of amber. At its peak, the storm swept up 140,000 tons of soil per hour. In spite of the worst dust storm in 70 years, intrepid photographers ventured outside to document what was happening to their homes, neighborhoods, and country. This is what they saw.

Derek describes the process of how he published the magazine using the print-on-demand service MagCloud. His project was recently featured in TIME Magazine.

The panel was moderated by Jason Preston and featured Tucker Max, Loni Love, Chris Hardwick and a surprise, unscheduled appearance by professional wresting champion The Iron Sheik, who recently joined Twitter. Don’t get him started about “that fucking Hulk Hogan”.

Last Wednesday Chris Hardwick invited me to a taping of his show Web Soup at the G4 studios located at the Comcast Entertainment Group building in LA’s Miracle Mile. On show Chris shares ridiculous videos they find on the web or submitted by viewers, along with the occasional field report. It’s a really fun show and Chris is a great host.

I shot a few behind the scenes photos while at the taping of the show which airs tonight and each Tuesday night at 8pm ET on G4 after Attack of the Show.
