Wes Anderson Cosplayers Mocked At Tenenbaum FAIL

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

guest post by Aaron Muszalski

Tenenbaum FAIL

If FAIL Blog had a Futura and coke-fueled fling with Wes Anderson cosplayers in the back of the Beauty Bar, its lovechild might grow up to look something like Tenenbaum FAIL. A series of photos offered without commentary (other than the ubiquitous, requisite “FAIL”) it’s hard to tell whether the anonymous editor’s intent is mockery or celebration. Or perhaps both. “mockebration” anyone?

Speakeasy, A Fundraiser For The Swimming Cities of Serenissima

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Moses Grubb and Spy Emerson are hosting a Speakeasy at Ritual Roasters in San Francisco this Thursday, March 26th from 7-11pm. The event is a fundraiser for their involvement with Swimming Cities of Serenissima, a fleet of 3 handmade boats traveling the Adriatic Sea from the Karst region of Slovenia to Venice, Italy in May of 2009 in order to crash the Venice Biennale. The project, organized by New York printmaker and installation artist SWOON, is a follow up to Swimming Cities of Switchback Sea (Hudson River, 2008) and the Miss Rockaway Armada (Mississippi River, 2006 and 2007).

A classic big city speakeasy, featuring a stage show, specialty libations, a card table, and an auction by Flora Grubb. a hush hush event with lots of surprises. Speakeasy is a fundraiser benefiting Moses and Spy’s participation in the Swimming Cities of Serenissima project: a fleet of handmade boats and a crew of collaborating artists travel the Adriatic Sea from Slovenia to Venice, performing and propagating the dreamy story of a drifting metropolis designed by SWOON.

Miniature Art Urban Installation In The Mission

Miniature art on Albion Street

Minature art (detail) on Albion Street

Over at the popular San Francisco neighborhood blog Mission Mission, Tomi Laine Clark has documented a wonderful micro art installation she found on a wall across the street from her apartment. I highly recommend taking a look at the full set of photos, as they’re really quite delightful. An unexpected recontextualization of the urban experience, done to dollhouse scale.

Needless to say, this is just one more in an endless list of reasons why I’m joyful to call myself a San Franciscan.

Wasting My Time by Superpowerless, A Tribute To Video Games

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

guest post by Doctor Popular

While thousands of game designers flock to the Bay Area for this years Game Developer Conference, a chiptune artist from Leeds, UK is getting ready for the debut of his first music video on MTV. “Wasting My Time” by Superpowerless is a catchy pop song about a life spent playing video games. The video uses stop motion animation, balloons, and cardboard boxes to pay tribute to classic video games. “Wasting My Time” is set to debut on MTV on March 23rd but you can watch the video online (as well as the “making of” video). I never would have imagined I could turn MTV and catch a music video from an unsigned chiptune artist… but then again, it’s rare enough to even find anything music related on MTV.

Get Excited And Make Things, UK Sign Remixed For Make Generation

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

guest post by Aaron Muszalski

Get Excited and Make Things

Inspired by a WWII era poster currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity in the United KingdomMatt Jones produced the image above, whose timely call to action - “Get Excited and Make Things” - is perfect for the growing DIY and Maker movement. (I especially like the crown of spanners. In fact, in the spirit of the poster, I think I’ll weld myself one out of actual spanners.)

Response for Matt’s design has been so strong that UK t-shirt vendor Howies has made it available as a t-shirt for men and women.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Matt’s version isn’t the first remix of the “Keep Calm and Carry On” poster. Designer Olly Moss previously produced this tellingly satirical inversion, “Now Panic and Freak Out”.

Now Panic and Freak Out

San Francisco art director and culture jammer Matthew Williams produced this Burning Man inspired version, “Get Funky and Burn Stuff”.

Get Funky and Burn Stuff

Lastly, there’s this appropriately British version, which cheerfully proposes that people simply “Drink Beer and Carry On”. And I think I shall.
