shape note singing

Monday, September 29th, 2008

recently i met a couple of shape note singers and went on a little websploration :: shape notes were used over the past couple centuries in the south for congregational singing to help people who couldn't read music. Beginners pair shapes with the solfege syllables (do, re, mi, etc...) :: here's an example where the song consists of no words (for the first minute or so), only solfege :: more recordings :: and some more :: and a documentary

:: harsh, simple, powerful harmony singing :: i dig it

Hack The Debate

Tonight my friends at Current invited me to check out the behind-the-scenes action at their first ever Hack The Debate event where they joined forces with Twitter to provide real-time Twitter updates during Current’s broadcast of the presidential debates.

Hack The Debate

While at the Current offices we were greeted by special guest Al Gore, who co-founded Current along with Joel Hyatt.

I shot video of Al’s welcome speech where the subject of Twitter came up and he promised that by tomorrow he would be using Twitter. He mentioned that he was normally an early adopter, but had not yet joined Twitter.

Once the debate was under way, I walked over to the Twitter Headquarters, where they were in full swing, making sure that Twitter stayed up and running throughout the night. Based on the numbers they shared with us after the debates, they did an amazing job and are more than ready for election night.

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival 2008

Friday, September 26th, 2008

guest post by RICK!

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2008 is October 3, 4 and 5th in Golden Gate Park (PDF). Warren Hellman, famed investment banker and amateur banjo player, gifts San Francisco every year with a concert billed with some of greatest acoustic performers in the country. This year’s lineup (PDF) includes notable bands: Elvis Costello High Whines & Spirits, Gogol Bordello, Nick Lowe, Iron & Wine, The Waybacks, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Loundon Wainwright III, Ben Kweller, Robert Plant with Alison Krauss, MC Hammer (you heard me.), and of course Warren’s band The Wronglers.

Also, I’ll be a volunteer coordinator at this year’s event, and our Green Team could use some help on monitoring recycling and composting bins. All volunteers get traning, a box lunch, a staff shirt and karma points for helping out a completely free festival created out of a simple love of music. Email volunteer@hardlystrictlybluegrass.com if you’re interested in pitching in.

History Hacker, Hosted by Bre Pettis on The History Channel

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Our good friend Bre Pettis who produces new media for Etsy, has created a television pilot for “History Hacker” airing tonight on The History Channel. On the show, which Bre produced and hosts, he explores history’s great inventors, taking a hands-on look at their inventions and new ways to hack them. The pilot episode, which is all about Nikola Tesla and his pioneering work with electricity, airs tonight, Friday, September 26th at 8pm and midnight. Here’s the History Hacker teaser video.

Meet Nikola Tesla, the unsung genius behind the most miraculous advances of the Age of Electricity, and Hacker-extraordinaire Bre Pettis who will break the history of electricity down to its nuts and bolts. Bre will show you how to build your own versions of Tesla’s greatest inventions and takes you on a journey from New York City’s ultra modern power plants, to one of the world’s most advanced satellite research labs, and then onward into the future of energy…unlimited wireless power.

On the set of History Hacker

If all goes well Bre’s “History Hacker” pilot will be turned into a full series on The History Channel, so please help make this a reality by spreading the word about the show. If you can’t watch it live, be sure to set your Tivo or DVR to record it. Here’s the show listing on The History Channel.

You can give feedback and discuss the show in the History Channel Forums and History Hacker Facebook group and for the latest updates on the show, follow Bre on Twitter.

After my visit to Marvel Comics last week in midtown Manhattan, I was in the neighborhood so I dropped by the Empire State Building. I hadn’t been there in years, so I took a quick trip up to 86th floor observatory and shot a few photos & video.
