Escape From Berkeley (By Any Non-Petroleum Means Necessary)

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Escape From Berkeley (By Any Non-Petroleum Means Necessary) is a road rally of alternatively powered vehicles traveling from Berkeley to Las Vegas on October 10th through 13th. A panel of judges will be presenting awards for both artistic and technical achievements. The rally is being organized by Jim Mason and The Shipyard.

Part engineering problem, part artistic opportunity, the rally challenges contestants to start their “engines” on something other than petroleum based fuel, and by any means necessary, cause their “vehicles” show up in Las Vegas three days later- using only fuels/power/motive force scavenged “for free” along the route.

Here’s the current line-up of vehicles and there is still time to register your vehicle if you want to enter. If you would like to help support the rally, you can sponsor the route by the mile or specific landmark. They are also looking for more volunteers.

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Taunts Upside-Down David Blaine

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Last week extreme illusionist David Blaine performed his “Dive of Death” where he hung upside-down from a thin wire for 60 hours above Wollman Rink in Central Park.

While he was up there, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog paid a visit to David, making fun of him as he hung above the crowd. Our friends Liz Gannes of NewTeeVee and Joey Wan of GigaOM happened by the scene making a guest appearance in the video.

The Wicker Man – A Rock Opera at The Dark Room

Monday, September 29th, 2008

guest post by Aaron Muszalski

A Rock Opera About The Ultimate Sacrifice

After suffering a predicatably soulless remake starring Nicolas Cage in 2006, the beloved 1973 cult horror film The Wicker Man was ripe for a more entertaining adaptation.

That adaptation arrives this week, in the form of The Wicker Man: A Rock Opera About The Ultimate Sacrifice. Created by notorious San Francisco underground theater artists, Cameron Eng and Sean Owens, as part of their series of “Foul Plays”, The Wicker Man stars Flynn DeMarco, Steffanos X and Maura Sipila, and features an original music score by Jim Fourniadis and LIVE EVIL. Also keep an eye out for Laughing Squid guestblogger (and Man Of 1,003 Faces) Mikl-em, who performs in several roles.

April showers bring the sanctimonious Sergeant Howie a mysterious letter concerning a missing girl from Summerisle, the tiny pagan island commune renowned for its bountiful produce and unabashed holy day rituals. His investigation of the restless natives proves as fruitless as last year’s crops, though; and the bizarre inhabitants only serve to add fuel to the flames of his righteous indignation. Driven to save the girl’s immortal soul from this den of idolaters, he discovers the truth behind the girl’s disappearance—that come May Day, the villagers intend to sacrifice her to their gods of the field to ensure a successful harvest. Howie must infiltrate their festivities, find the girl and escape—but will his plan put him out of the frying pan and into the fire?

The Wicker Man: A Rock Opera About The Ultimate Sacrifice opens this Thursday, October 2nd at The Dark Room. It runs through October 25th.

NoiseBridge, An Open Project Space for Hackers In San Francisco

Monday, September 29th, 2008

NoiseBridge

NoiseBridge, a new open project space for hackers, just opened San Francisco’s Mission District. See Hacker Spaces for similar spaces around the world.

We want to provide infrastructure and collaboration opportunities for people interested in programming, hardware hacking, physics, chemistry, mathematics, photography, security, robotics, all kinds of art, and, of course, technology. Through talks, workshops, and projects we encourage knowledge exchange, learning, and mentoring.

As a space for artistic collaboration and experimentation, we are open to all types of art - with a special emphasis on the crossover of art and technology. From hardware labs to electronics, cooking, photography, and sound labs, anything that’s creative is welcome.

We intend to have many interesting things happening at all times. Sharing is essential to making this work. A logical followup to this is to find a space to display our creative projects.

Shake Shack, A Unique Hamburger Joint In The Heart of NYC

Shake Shack

Shake Shack

Shake Shack

Shake Shack

On my recent visit to New York City, I finally had a chance to check out the legendary Shake Shack, a unique open air hamburger joint located in the southeast corner of Madison Square Park (a portion of each purchase goes to Madison Square Park Conservancy) in Midtown Manhattan.

Shake Shack

Some consider Shake Shack to be NYC’s answer to the West Coast’s In-N-Out Burger, but it’s really it’s own unique experience. Shake Shack is so popular that it usually has a very long line and they are well aware of this, providing signs with useful information for the people waiting in line, including a Shake Shack Menu, Shack Trivia, Sha-cercise tips and Shack FAQs . In fact, they even have a live webcam where you can check out the length of the line before heading over.

Shake Shack Meetup

Shake Shack is also web geek central. In fact it even has it’s own Shake Shack Flashmob Twitter account where people can report and share information about it. After one of the days at Web 2.0 Expo NYC, a bunch of us had an impromptu meetup at Shake Shack, and from what I hear that kind of thing happens quite often.

Save NIMBY! Help The DIY Art Space Relocate After Their Fire

Monday, September 29th, 2008

A few weeks back the DIY industrial art space NIMBY in Oakland had a fire, forcing the space to close. Snook and the artists who run this amazing community arts space have launched a massive campaign to move NIMBY to a new location and they looking for help in the form of monetary donations.

We are rolling out a campaign to make this move happen for NIMBY. The minimum amount of money we need for moving is $50,000. NIMBY must pay another $30,000 in rent to get up to the end of the lease. Then there are the NIMBY monthly expenses, the actual cost of moving itself, and development costs to get the new space set-up. All things considered $50,000 is a low ball number to get us started - but if we can raise that we know we can pull this off.

If 1,000 people donate $50 - we will reach our goal. Who remembers a Thanksgiving or a Christmas at NIMBY when you had nowhere else to go? An art piece created at NIMBY that gave you “one of those moments” on the playa? A time when Snook helped you with trucking, let you use his tools, gave you the part you were missing, fed you, or helped you out when you needed it? We only need 1,000 of you to step-up and donate. Snook and NIMBY have taken care of far more people than that over the past 5 years.

Pacific Pinball Expo 2008, Over 300 Pinball Games Past & Present

Monday, September 29th, 2008

The 2nd annual Pacific Pinball Expo 2008 takes place October 3-5 at the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael. The event features over 300 pinball machines spanning a period of 100 years and it is also a fundraiser for the Pacific Pinball Museum, which is currently operating out of the Lucky JuJu pinball arcade in Alameda.

The Pacific Pinball Exposition (PPE) is focused on representing vintage and antique electromechanical and purely mechanical pinball machines and arcade games and devices. There will also be a healthy dose of modern machines to balance it out. It is our goal to bring a broader awareness of the fun and nostalgia, as well as the significance pinball has played in American and world culture through fun, interactive exhibits, clinics and lots of hands on playing of games that defined “Amusement” in the 20th century!

Here are photos from last year’s Pacific Pinball Expo by Greg Maletic, who made the documentary “TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball”.

For the latest updates, follow the Pacific Pinball Expo on Twitter.
