Howard Rheingold has been uploading scans of some wonderful sketches he made in his notebook from a HotWired (Wired Magazine’s original web presence) meeting that took place on May 18th, 1994. What an amazing piece of internet history.

On a related note, here’s Jeff Veen’s write-up on the history of HotWired interfaces.

Orangina Naturally Juicy Commercial

Monday, December 31st, 2007

“Naturally Juicy” is a totally bizarre and overtly sexual commercial spot for Orangina that includes, among other things, an anthropomorphic octopus giving a lap dance.

It’s like a travel promotion for a Furry fantasy getaway.

Terminus by Trevor Cawood & Spy Films

Monday, December 31st, 2007

“Terminus” is a fantastic short film by Trevor Cawood and Spy Films that features one very persistent concrete stalker, along with great visual effects in a 1970’s setting.

After inadvertently offending a strange entity that accosts him on his way to work, a 1970s businessman quickly finds himself in the midst if a bizarre predicament. What follows is a rapid descent into madness, a journey both eerie and darkly humorous. The exact nature of the businessman’s tormentor is purposefully ambiguous, lending itself to a variety of interpretations.

Crate Digger Death-Match, Making An Album In 12 Hours Using $12

Monday, December 31st, 2007

The Crate Digger Death-Match

The Crate Digger Death-Match ‘08 challenges 12 musicians to create an entire album in 12 hours using only $12 worth of music and materials. CDD takes place this Saturday, January 5th from 8am to 8pm and is being organized by Doctor Popular, TradeMark G and Z. Here’s more info, including the competition rules and judging.

The Crate Digger Death-match is an audio experiment wherein 12 different musicians attempt to create an entire album in under 12 hours using only $12 worth of cds, records, vhs tapes, or children’s toys as their instruments.

They are still looking for a few more competitors, prize sponsors and they could also use some tech help with a good system for the online judging.

Danger Ranger’s Annual Post-Yule Pyre Christmas Tree Beach Burn

Post Yule Pyre

Christmas is over, so you know what that means. It’s time to grab a dead Christmas tree and join the Friends of the Rootless Forest for Danger Ranger’s Annual Post-Yule Pyre this Saturday, January 5th. Here are my photos from last year.

An annual San Francisco tradition occurs at this time of the year, when the last stand of sidewalk fir trees is logged by the Friends of the Rootless Forest and then piled up on the beach for some very rapid composting. Saturday, January 5th, meet at the Carousel Diner, 2750 Sloat Blvd at 7:00 PM. Look for the giant Doghead in the middle of the street. We’ll hang out for half an hour and then head west, using caution, stealth and tom-foolery to avoid the white tiger that prowls the Great Highway. Bring a christmas tree and libations. No glass containers on the beach, you assume the risk, no one is in charge, your mileage may very. And for those who are infused with gift-giving guilt and holiday cheer, carbon credits can be purchased to offset the footprint of our dedication to christmas consumption.

Cyclecide Bike Rodeo New Year’s Eve Show at Ace Auto Junkyard

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

Rike Rodeo Fire Barrel

Our friends at Cyclecide Bike Rodeo are having a big New Year’s Eve Show at the Ace Auto junkyard in San Francisco, with bikes, bands and beer. Here’s more info:

WHAT: Cyclecide Bike Rodeo’s FREE New Year’s Eve party!

WHERE: the Drunkyard (Ace Auto), 2255 McKinnon near Bayshore, SFCA

WHEN: 8pm - 2 or 3am. (First band goes on at 8:30 sharp.)

WHO: Five freakin’ bands playing, your broke-ass friends and family, and all yr favorite drunk Bike Rodeo klowns. No rides, just bands and good cheer.

WHY: Because everybody knows New Year’s Eve is always an overpriced, disappointing bore. Unless you’re surrounded by bike parts and fire barrels in the ghetto, drinking Pabst and cheap cocktails with all your favorite dirtbags.

HOW MUCH: Free, duh! But please buy drinks, because we need to pay rent on the clubhouse and recoup expenses from our last tour. Donations from teetotalers welcome also. $2 beers; $3 cocktails.

AND DON’T FORGET: Dress warmly and wear comfortable shoes. You will be climbing around outside like an idiot while all the other rubes in town put on loafers and high-heeled stilts to jam themselves into techno-infested hellholes of insanity. There will be heat and fire sources, trust us.

Featuring (in order of first to last):

DJ Big Daddy

The Thripps

Tiger Honeypot

Trainwreck Riders

Whores of War

Hammer Horror Classics

Why pay exorbitant door charges on the last night of the year just to watch amateur drunks at expensive clubs … when you can save enough money to afford to join the professional drunks at Ace Junkyard!

Non-valet bike parking provided by yourself inside the junkyard. Bring a lock. Taxi company HQ across the street, but we can’t promise anything there.

With prices like this, you can’t afford NOT to party with Cyclecide on New Year’s Eve!
